The Boys Club of
La Habra was founded in 1955, and in 1958 opened the original
building for boys, in an area where the needs of children are great.
In the early 80's we took over the Boxing Club and ran it
successfully until 2004. In 1986, a second part of the building
was built and designated for girls, under the leadership and
direction of Thomas Sauer. 1988 the Boys & Girls Club of Brea was
added to our list of Clubs and in 1989 we opened our Teen Center, in
2002 it became the John & Tillie Campos Teen Center. The Club later
opened the now thriving Robert E. Fulton Education Center, named
after a long time Board Member who gave us a foundation grant to
help us start our education program back in November 1991 when the
new Executive Director, Daniel S. Casey, came on board. Robert
passed away in 1995 from Cancer. The Boys & Girls Clubs worked with
his widow who donated close to one million dollars to help build our
now standing Education Center named after her late husband. In 1991,
under Mr. Casey’s leadership, the name changed to the Boys & Girls
Clubs of La Habra/Brea. In 2001 the La Habra Boys & Girls Club
Alumni Association was organized under the direction and leadership
of Mark Chavez, Associate Executive Director. We currently have 15
former Club members encompassing this group. In 2006 we
collaborated with La Habra City School District, under the State of
California’s After School Education & Safety Grant, (A.S.E.S),
enabling us to open up 9 school sites where we service over 780
children.
Our Clubs are
part of a nationwide affiliation of over 4,000 local Clubs that have
provided a safe place for children since the organization's founding
in 1906. The Club's mission is to help youth of all backgrounds,
with a special concern for those from disadvantaged circumstances
and those who need us most, to develop the qualities needed to
become responsible citizens and leaders. We are a not-for-profit
organization that is dedicated to helping the children in our
community by providing not only our normal Boys & Girls Clubs
programming, but also an extended day program as well as many
special events throughout the year. These added programs help us
reach out to children who might not otherwise be able to attend
because of transportation needs, and allows them to discover parts
of their community they normally would not get to see. Our goal is
to create an environment that encourages, enlightens, and builds the
self-esteem through character and leadership development, education
and career development, health and life skills, the arts, sports,
fitness and recreation.
La Habra has served thousands of youth
annually. Since its inception, well over 125,000 youth have
been registered participants. Notable graduates include:
Juan Garcia, former La Habra City Councilman and Mayor; Carlos Romo,
the 1985 National Boys & Girls Club of America Youth of the Year. |
